Killer Instinct "discussed many times," says Xbox boss Phil Spencer

By Sean Carey,
Xbox boss Phil Spencer has revealed that he'd like to see another entry into Killer Instinct, the classic fighting game franchise, providing Microsoft can find the right team to revive the IP.

During the Dropped Frames podcast, Spencer spoke about Microsoft's love for the franchise, revealing that he and head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty regularly discussed what to do with the series. "There are so many good games in our catalogue that we'd love to visit," Spencer said. "The response when we redid KI at the launch of Xbox One was fantastic. Not everybody inside of the org saw what that game could become. I will just say Matt [Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios] and I have discussed many times KI and where we would like to go with it, and it's not out of our minds — it might be out of our minds — but it's in our hearts and in our minds that we want to continue to do something with KI.

"It is about finding the right team and the right opportunity," Spencer continued. "It is not due to any kind of lack of desire on our part that we're not doing more with KI because we love the franchise and the community response."

Killer Instinct first launched back in 1994 before it was rebooted as an Xbox One launch title back in 2013. Since then, the IP has laid dormant, and we haven't had a new entry into the series for eight years. Although the reboot has never really been considered one of the top games in the fighting genre, it did gather a cult following that still play to this day and are craving more.

During the same podcast, Spencer also spoke about 343 Industries commitment to launch Halo Infinite this holiday season.
