Microsoft slates next Xbox console generation for 2028

By Heidi Nicholas,

As Microsoft continues its efforts with its proposed Activision Blizzard acquisition, another piece of Xbox news emerges as it seems Microsoft expects the next generation of consoles in 2028.

We know already that Sony won't share PS6 plans with an Xbox-owned Activision Blizzard, but we now have an inkling of when we might expect the next Xbox and the PS6, as Microsoft apparently slates the "expected starting period" for them as 2028.

IGN reports viewing documents in which Microsoft says 2028 is the "expected starting period” of the next console generation. These documents are apparently now public as a result of the ongoing case for Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard. As IGN notes, this would put the next Xbox as arriving eight years after the Xbox Series X|S, which arrived on November 10, 2020.

One Xbox exec recently stated that “it takes years and years and years to build great games”, so perhaps a fair few of Microsoft's future "great games" are slated for the next Xbox console.

What do you make of the idea that the next Xbox could arrive from 2028 onwards? With how long it's taken for Xbox Series X and S consoles to be available after supply shortages, does this seem like a good amount of time before the next Xbox console joins the market?
