Xbox Game Pass "unanimously" disliked by publishers, claims PlayStation boss

By Sean Carey,

Despite numerous publishers sharing their love for Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan says that actually all publishers "unanimously" dislike Game Pass as it's "value destructive."

Speaking during a pre-recorded video deposition as part of Microsoft's ongoing court case against the Federal Trade Commission, Ryan hit out at Xbox Game Pass, claiming that all publishers dislike Microsoft's gaming subscription service.

"I talked to all publishers, and they unanimously do not like Game Pass because it’s value destructive," Ryan said, as reported by IGN. Ryan later added that he talks to publishers all the time and that this dislike for Game Pass is apparently a "very commonly held view by publishers."

Ryan also believes that there are challenges with the Game Pass business model and that "Microsoft appears to be losing a lot of money on it."

Over the years, we've seen a lot of love for Xbox Game Pass from publishers and developers. One that immediately springs to mind is Descenders publisher No More Robots, who has said it's aiming to get all future releases onto Xbox Game Pass and that the subscription service "de-risks" entire game projects. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio believes that Game Pass has "contributed largely" to Yakuza's popularity in the West, and Sega itself has said it was happy with how its games are performing in Game Pass.

Shortly after Jim Ryan's comments, publisher Wired Productions tweeted that it, too, loves Xbox Game Pass.

Arcade Paradise was published by Wired Productions, and it's one of many new games coming to Game Pass in July.
