Site Feature: 'Story completed' achievement flag and associated functionality

By Rich Stone,
Today, we are introducing a new achievement flag to the site — Story Completed.

Many modern games are huge, sprawling things where it can take hundreds of hours to unlock all of the achievements. Sometimes, you might find that you need a break after the credits roll instead of jumping straight back in to mop up things like collectables and side missions. Other times, you might just be happy to call a game done after finishing the campaign. Either way, the new Story Completed flag allows us to indicate when the main story has been finished within these games based on any related achievements.

The Game Information Team has gone through all of the games on the site and added this new flag to the achievements that indicate that the story has been finished, where appropriate.

This has allowed us to add some new functionality today, and will also allow for further developments to come.

How is the Story Completed flag useful?

Apart from the obvious benefit of being able to see at a glance which achievement(s) in a game marks completion of the main story, there is some other functionality we have already built that makes good use of this flag:

Friend feed Story Completed notifications

When you finish the story in a game, you'll now get a new notification in your friend feed to say as much:

This will help make it easier to avoid dropping spoilers when discussing games with other site members, as you'll be able to see at a glance whether they've beaten a game or not before divulging any details.

Story Completed indicator in game progress panels

We've added the date you completed the story into the gamer progress header on game pages:

Story Completed tweets

If you have your Twitter account hooked up to your TA account, you now have a new option to auto-tweet when you complete the story in a game:

Planned functionality

We also plan on implementing more systems to further utilise the Story Completed flag in the future, including:
  • Time estimates for story completion
  • List of friends who have completed the story in each game
  • Find games you've started but haven't finished the story
  • Find games you've finished the story but haven't got the completion

FAQ

Games without a story

Not all games have a story (such as Pool Nation), so these games haven't had the flag added to any of their achievements.

Games with multiple ending achievements

Some games have multiple achievements tied to different endings (Fable 2, for instance) — where this happens, all of the relevant achievements will have the flag set. You will only get one notification for the game however, for the first Story Completed achievement you unlock.

I've spotted a game with missing flags — how can I let you know?

There are a lot of games on the site, and inevitably some Story Completed achievements will have been missed. You can let the team know the missing ones by using the Submit achievement flags link from the game dropdown. Note: if the team disagrees with the flag suggestion, they may not add it.

Can I hide the new friend feed notifications?

Yes, you can hide any friend feed notification types from your Site Settings page.

Thank you GI Team!

I want to thank the Game Info team for their work on getting this flag set up, it's been a labour of love and I'm so pleased we've been able to get it live!

Swing by tomorrow for the final new feature of Community Month!

Yo! Rich here - I was the one that created TrueAchievements back in 2008 as I felt the Xbox Gamerscore system could be improved. The site has evolved massively since then and it's now the biggest and best Xbox community on the planet! Racing games and open world shooters are my thing, but I'll give most genres a go. Except RPGs - those things are evil.
