Capcom boss reveals lofty sales target for Street Fighter 6

Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto has revealed the publisher's expectations for upcoming fighting game Street Fighter 6, aiming to punch above previous games in the series and sell a cool 10 million copies.

Street Fighter 6 is set to bring the legendary fighting franchise back to Xbox next month, and following the well-received beta tests and recent SF6 demo, Capcom has revealed that it expects the new game to outperform previous entries and is aiming for sales of over 10 million copies.

Street Fighter 6 aiming for 10 million sold, says Capcom boss

Speaking with Famitsu, Tsujimoto laid out Capcom's projections for Street Fighter 6. "SFV has already sold over 7 million copies, so if we can make use of our digital experience, we should be able to aim for 10 million copies with our next game," he says, also expanding a little on the firm's increasing shift towards digital, since digital sales apparently now account for "about 80% of annual sales" for Capcom.

While hitting that 10 million target on a single SKU would be enough to drive SF6 into Capcom's top five games of all time, it's perhaps not as ambitious as it may first seem, looking at prior form for both franchise and genre. As Tsujimoto mentions, Street Fighter V managed to hit 7 million despite only launching on PS4 and PC and having a rough first few years, while Street Fighter IV across its various guises reached over 9.5 million. Elsewhere on the fighting scene, Tekken 7 passed the 10m milestone back in December, while Mortal Kombat 11 was higher still at 15 million as of late last year, so this kind of performance isn't all that unusual for the genre's heavy hitters.

We picked out SF6 as one of 2023's most exciting Xbox games, and there's quite the positive buzz around the new fighter, particularly with it being the series' most accessible entry to date and piling on single player content like its open-ended World Tour mode, so it'll certainly be interesting to see how it performs when it launches for Xbox Series X|S on June 2nd.

Do you think Capcom will hit 10 million with Street Fighter 6? What do you make of the fighter so far, if you've jumped into either the betas or the demo? Let us know down in the comments!
